IT traineeship without diploma

Many people wonder whether it is possible to follow an IT traineeship without a higher professional education or university diploma. This is because traineeships often require a higher professional or university level of thinking. However, a diploma or previous education in IT is not the only indicator that determines whether you are smart enough for an IT traineeship. In fact, it is often not a good indicator at all. There can be countless reasons why you didn’t graduate, even though you do have the talent to become an IT professional. Whether you need a diploma ultimately depends on the requirements that a client sets for a trainee.

Classic vs. modern IT traineeships

Traineeships date back to the 1990s. Graduates were placed at major banks and insurance companies, where they then hopped from department to department to discover what suited them best, or where the organization needed them most.

Classic IT traineeships are often still approached in the same way. Young professionals with a diploma are recruited, spend two years browsing various organizations and IT roles, before being seconded to the place that suits them best.

However, there are also modern traineeships, which focus more on the individual learning curve and a long-term match with an employer. This method is based on an extensive matching process, in which the best match between candidate and client is sought. For example, by linking the work culture of an organization with the character of the candidate, you can already estimate on paper whether there is a good match or not. That is working on a lasting relationship between trainee and client, instead of hopping between organizations and departments for months.

If there is a good match between candidate and client, you can also offer much more targeted courses that match the trainee’s tech ambitions and the wishes and working methods of the client.

As you can see, we are more of a fan of the modern way of working. We believe that a stable working climate at an organization that suits you is essential to be able to develop in your dream position.
